Under the Habitats Regulations it is an offence to damage or destroy a breeding site or resting place of any bat. This was the predicament facing us when we were asked to make the ground and top floor open plan on a house built in the 1860s without disturbing the bats who occupied the loft space. We had to run vertical and horizontal steelwork through all three levels of the house to take the roof perlins that were being supported at the time by queen trusses (these were to be removed after the steelwork's in place to make it open plan).
